Still Smiling

April 1, 2008

It's April Fool's Day but that's not the reason I am smiling. The postscript of the 2008 men's basketball season will be written on Wednesday, April 16 with the annual Hoop Club awards banquet taking place at the Leavey Center on campus. I'll be there with hundreds of fellow Hoyas to honor this year's team and the deserving seniors. But mostly, I'll be there to say thanks for making me smile this year. For me, it was another enjoyable season, just the 27th since I first started working at Georgetown as then-director of Hoyas Unlimited. For the members of the team however, the season was one of only four that they are eligible to play while wearing the blue and gray. With my longer perspective, perhaps it is somewhat easier for me to even out the bumps within a single season.

I particularly enjoyed watching this year's team play for their coach. What made me smile was the way they played with heart -- lots of talent also -- but so much heart.

There is another reason why I will be on hand to thank Coach Thompson and his squad. This team brought Georgetown fans worldwide together for the past five months in so many positive ways, connecting them to each other and to the University they care about.

And when they came together to support the Hoyas, these fans smiled as well.

Hoya, Hoya Saxa!
