Sept. 11, 2008
Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown women's soccer team will play their first home game in the month of September when they host Towson on Friday afternoon at North Kehoe Field at 3 p.m. The Hoyas will look to continue on their solid start to the 2008 season as they go head-to-head with a good Tiger team that has won their last two contests.
Sophomores Michaela Buonomo (Churchville, Pa/Council Rock) and Jackie DesJardin (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) were named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday by the league offices. Buonomo was also named to the SoccerBuzz Magazine Elite Team of the Week after being named to the George Mason All-Tournament Team. The defender scored a goal in the victory over Mississippi State, while DesJardin has recorded consecutive shutouts for the Blue & Gray. The sophomores help make up a GU defense that has played 200-plus minutes without allowing a goal.
GU also kept their undefeated start to the 2008 season alive, with their first win over a SEC opponent in program history and a 0-0 draw against Hartford. Four Hoyas were named to the George Mason All-Tournament team; Toni Marie Hudson (Coral Springs, Fla./Stoneman Douglas), Stephanie Zare (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest), Buonomo and Caitlin Durkee (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park).
Hudson leads the team in goals with four, while Durkee and freshman Kelly D'Ambrisi (Trumbull, Conn./Lauralton Hall Academy) are tied for the team lead in assists with four apiece. Both Durkee and D'Ambrisi are ranked among the top-20 nationally in assists.
The Hoyas received votes in this week's NSCAA/adidas rankings and are currently one of three undefeated BIG EAST teams. Georgetown is 4-2-0 all-time against Towson, winning the last meeting in 2005, 3-0. Current Hoya Sara Jordan had two assists in the contest.
Towson moved over the .500 mark for the first time this season after pulling out a 1-0 overtime victory against Rider. Towson's last four games have been decided by only one goal. Sophomore defender Melissa Gomes provided the game-winner, scoring the first goal of her college career in the 97th minute off a corner kick by junior Kaitlyn Zamroz. Freshman goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak played the final 52 minutes and helped preserve the win with a pair of saves. Towson launched a season-high 36 shots versus Rider. Tomorrow's game starts a four-game road swing for the Tigers that also includes GU local rival, American.
