Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's tennis team earned a 4-1 decision over Richmond on Friday evening after losing to VCU in their spring season opener this afternoon, 5-0, at the VCU 4+1 Tournament.
Graduate student Ned Samuelson (Belmont, Mass./Milton Academy) competed in the top singles match and was defeated by Martin Schulhauser, 7-5, 6-2. Junior David Tillem (Atlanta, Ga./The Weber School) lost at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 6-3, while freshman Mieszko Tomczyk (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hunter College H.S) and senior Kenneth Wong (Repulse Bay, Hong Kong/St. Pauls's (N.H.)) were knocked off by identical scores, 6-1, 6-1.
"VCU is just a really, really good team, but I thought we played well and had some chances," Head Coach Gordie Ernst said. "Andrew and Adam had a shot in the doubles match and Ned also had a shot at winning his match as he led 4-1 in the first set."
In doubles play, Emil Lindgren and Benjamin Bouhana were victorious over GU senior Adam Gross (Quogue, N.Y./Westhampton) and freshman Andrew Bruhn (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) , 6-2, 7-6 (5).
Against Richmond, Tillem earned a three-set win at the No. 1 position while Gross and junior Will Lowell (Nahant, Mass./Saddlebrook Prep) earned straight-set victories. Samuelson and Tomczyk earned a win in doubles action with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 triumph as the Hoyas earned their first win of the 2009 season.
The Hoyas return to the court next Saturday, January 24, when they travel to Annapolis, MD., to take on the U.S. Naval Academy.
