Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University swimming & diving team was defeated in their dual meet on Saturday at St. Bonaventure. The women's team was defeated 175-112, while the men lost 183-114. On the day, the Hoyas accumulated six first-place finishes and 14 second-place results.
Freshman Victor Lopez-Cantera (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep) was able to earn wins in two events for the Blue & Gray, the 100 (52.74) and 200 butterfly (1:55.49), while classmate Gordon Peeler (Westfield, N.J./The Pingry School) took the 100 Freestyle in 50.07.
Junior Wes Going (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University High) and senior Dan Robinson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) also earned top finishes on the men's side in the 200 backstroke and 500 freestyle, respectively. Sophomore Caitlin Karniski (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) was victorious on the women's side in the three meter dive with a score of 238.28.
The Hoyas racked up a number of second-place finishes on the day as freshman Kristen Pratt (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo), sophomore Mallory Kiplinger (Darien, Conn./Darien) and freshman Chris Finnegan (Garden City, N.J./Garden City) were runners-up in multiple events.
Pratt finished second in the 200 butterfly (2:11.43) and 500 freestyle (5:27.76), Finnegan accomplished the feat in the 500 (4:59.58) and 1000 freestyle (10:18.68). Kiplinger was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle (54.45) and 200 IM (2:16.02) and was also a member on the 200 freestyle relay team with junior Lindsay Vickroy (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga), senior Katelyn O'Connor (New Rochelle, N.Y./The Ursuline School) and junior Laura Stark (Martinsville, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy).
Those three ladies also performed well individually. Vickroy finished with a time of 25.95 in the 50 freestyle, O'Connor swam a 2:17.34 in the 200 backstroke and Stark was second in the 100 butterfly (1:01.57).
Other second-place finishes were delivered by Karniski in the one meter dive, freshman Rob Gokey (Minot, N.D./Minot) in the 100 freestyle, junior Emma Porteus (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) in the 200 breaststroke and sophomore Rebecca Jenkinson (Concord, Mass./Concord Carlisle) in the three meter dive.
The Hoyas return to the pool next weekend for their lone home event of the spring. Georgetown will host Connecticut at the Albert G. McCarthy, Jr. Swimming Pool in Yates Field House on Saturday, January 31 at 1 p.m. The team will also be recognizing the accomplishments of their senior student-athletes at the event.
