WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's lacrosse team announced its award winners for the 2008 season at its annual banquet recently.
Brendan Cannon (Haverford, Pa./The Haverford School) and Miles Kass (Rye, N.Y./Hotchkiss) were the recipients of the William Corcoran Memorial Trophy, recognizing the team's Most Valuable Player. Cannon led the team in scoring for the third-straight season, finishing with 44 points on 23 goals and 21 assists despite missing the final game of the season. Cannon graduated from Georgetown seventh all-time in points scored (157), 12th all-time goals in scored(73) and third all-time in assists (84). Kass started every game in goal for the Hoyas and helped to lead a defensive unit that limited nine opponents to 10 goals or fewer and carried an 8.70 goals-against average.
Recently graduated attackman Andrew Baird (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) was the recipient of the Outstanding Offensive Player Award. Baird finished the 2008 season third on the team in scoring with 35 points, scoring 26 goals and recording nine assists. He scored a team-high 26 goals and finished his career with 69 goals, which ranks tied for 14th all-time at Georgetown.
Jerry Lambe (North Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale), who was named the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008, was named the team's Outstanding Defensive Player. A first-team All-American in 2008, Lambe led a defensive unit that limited opponents to 10 goals or fewer nine times this season. He picked up 13 ground balls and caused seven turnovers while guarding the opponent's top offensive player week after week.
Senior Dan Vinson (Pleasant Hill, Calif./De La Salle) was the recipient of the Jason "Prof" Decker Unsung Hero Award. A walk-on, Vinson worked his way into a starter at the face-off X and was a solid contributor for the Hoyas in that role last season. He won 51.6 percent of his face-offs (83-of-161) and had at least 10 wins in five different games.
Senior Todd Cochran (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) was named the team's Most Improved Player. Cochran saw limited action during his first two seasons on the Hilltop, but appeared in 10 games in 2008, starting six times. He scored 10 goals and had one assist for 11 points.
Sophomore Max Seligmann (Essex Falls, N.J./Delbarton) was named the team's Outstanding Freshman. Seligmann had a solid first season, starting eight of 13 games played and finishing the season with five goals and four assists for nine points.
The Leo H. McCormick Service Award was presented to Barclay Kass, while the Coaches' Awards went to 2008 graduates Chris Early (Wayne, Pa./Radnor)0 and Clayton Hall (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and to senior Chris Taylor (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island).
The 2009 season opens for Georgetown on Saturday, Feb. 21 at Maryland.
