Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team opened the 2009 season with a tough 5-3 loss to Northwestern during the inaugural BIG EAST - Big Ten Challenge on Friday night in Bradenton, Fla. Despite trailing by four runs entering the ninth inning, the Hoyas were able to rally and put the tying runner on base.
Trailing 5-1 entering the ninth inning redshirt sophomore Dan Capeless singled and senior Greg Pustizzi reached on an error by Northwestern's third baseman. Junior Tom Elliott reached on a fielder's choice and senior Sean Baumann lifted a sac fly to right to trim the deficit to three runs.
Senior Kelly Muir was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second for senior Tommy Lee and the co-captain came through with a run-scoring single. However, with Muir in scoring position and Lee representing the tying run, freshman Andy Lentz struck out swinging to end the game.
The Hoyas trailed 2-0 in the sixth inning before slicing the NU lead in half. Consecutive singles by Lee, junior Chip Malt and sophomore Erick Fernandez loaded the bases to start the inning. After sophomore Sean Lamont flied out to the shortstop, Capeless came through with a RBI single. Pustizzi was unable to keep the inning alive as he followed by hitting into a double play.
Senior Jimmy Saris (0-1) went five innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three batters. Junior Jack Bender pitched two innings in relief, allowing two runs, and junior Billy Concannon gave up an unearned run in his first appearance as a Hoya.
The Hoyas returns to action at 1 p.m. tomorrow against Indiana.
