Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's tennis team dropped an excruciating match on Friday to UMBC, 4-3. The final result came down to the last match as the Retrievers pulled out the victory.
"This was one of the best matches I've been a part of since arriving at Georgetown," Head Coach Gordie Ernst said. "It came down to Tim's [Walsh] match and in the future he will win matches like that for us."
After David Tillem (Atlanta, Ga./The Weber School) and Michael Clarke (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago/Saddlebrook Prep) gave the Hoyas an early advantage in doubles play, UMBC rallied back to steal the point. Georgetown would drop the first two singles matches of the afternoon to quickly fall behind 3-0.
However, the Hoyas rallied behind wins from Adam Gross (Quogue, N.Y./Westhampton), Tillem and Clarke to even the match, 3-3. Tim Walsh (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton) led 4-2 in the final match of the afternoon but was unable to close it out as the Hoyas fell.
