Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's tennis team lost on Tuesday to Florida Atlantic at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton, Fla., 7-0.
The Owls were able to sweep the doubles point as the duos of Kenneth Wong (Repulse Bay, Hong Kong/St. Pauls's (N.H.)) and Mieszko Tomczyk (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hunter College H.S.) and David Tillem (Atlanta, Ga./The Weber School) and Michael Clarke (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)) were each defeated 8-3. Also, the pairing of Kevin Walsh (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton) and Andrew Bruhn (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) lost by a score of 8-1 during their doubles match.
During singles play, FAU jumped to a 3-0 lead on five of the six courts. Santiago Nieto notched the first singles point with a straight set 6-0, 6-1 win over Rafael Notario (Bethesda, Md./The Heights School). Daniel Vardag soon followed on court two with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Clarke. Eddie Majcher, playing no. 5, clinched the dual match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Tim Walsh (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton).
On court three, Lawrence Harradine broke serve to win 6-1, 6-3, against Bruhn while, Joshua Scholl followed shortly after with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Wong. The final match was on court one where Tillem took nationally-ranked Marc Abdelnour to a first-et tiebreaker at 7-6(3), 6-3 before a forehand service return sealed the 7-0 victory for FAU.
The Hoyas will play their first match at the McDonough Tennis Complex this Sunday, March 15 at 2 p.m. against Duquesne.
