Hoyas Roll Rollins, 13-4

March 12, 2009

Box Score

Washington, D.C - For the fourth time this season, Georgetown scored 10 runs or more in a game and for the fourth time this season, the Hoyas picked up a win. Four players had multi-RBI games and the Blue & Gray defeated Rollins College on Thursday night, 13-4.

Alex Meyer picked up his first win of the season after allowing three runs over 6 1/3 innings and striking out six batters. Cary Piligian picked up a save for GU by allowing only one hit over the final 2 2/3 frames to close it out. The three earned runs allowed tied a season-low for the Hoya pitchers.

Georgetown started the game with a four-spot in the first inning to create some breathing room. Tommy Lee singled to center to get things going and after a groundout moved him to second, the senior stole third. Consecutive walks to Erick Fernandez and Sean Lamont loaded the bases before Sean Baumann lifted a sacrifice fly to center for a 1-0 lead.

Following that at-bat, Dan Capeless put a RBI single up the middle for a two-run lead. An error by Rollins' third baseman on a grounder by Greg Pustizzi kept the inning alive and the Hoyas capitalized. Tom Elliott made the Tars pay for their sloppy play as he laced a two-run double to right for a 4-0 lead.

Rollins cut the lead in half entering the fifth inning, but Chip Malt hit his first home run of the season to re-establish a three-run GU advantage. Malt finished three-for-four with two runs and two RBI's

The game was still in doubt as the eighth inning rolled around with Georgetown ahead, 5-3. However, the Hoyas put the game out of reach with five runs to hit double digits on the evening. With one out, pinch-hitter Rand Ravnaas beat out a come-backer to the mound and Lee legged out an infield single. After a failed pickoff attempt, a wild pitch scored Ravnaas. A passed ball on ball four to Malt scored Lee during the next at-bat.

Rollins' poor fielding continued as a dropped fly to center allowed Fernandez to reach base safely and the Hoyas hit three straight run-scoring singles (Lamont, Capeless and Pustizzi) to take a 10-3 lead.

GU tacked on three more runs in the ninth for the final margin. Lee walked with one out and pinch-hitter Andy Lentz singled to left. After that play, Fernandez collected his third hit of the day, a RBI double to the left-center gap. The sophomore finished three-for-five with three runs scored. Lentz would come home on a passed ball and Lamont's second RBI of the game, and team-leading 16th of the season, produced the 13th Hoya run.

GU returns to action at noon tomorrow against Penn
