Box Score
Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team played their sixth game of the season against the University of Pennsylvania on Friday afternoon and were turned away, 9-4. The Hoyas fall to 2-4 against the Quakers this season, 4-9 overall.
Trailing 4-0, GU got on the board in the second courtesy of a RBI double from Andy Lentz. The freshman knocked home Dan Capeless, who had walked, on a two-bagger down the rightfield line.
GU grabbed a few runs back in the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-3. Chip Malt reached on a throwing error by Penn's second baseman and Erick Fernandez followed with a single through the left side on the first pitch he saw. A wild pitch with one out moved the runners up a base and Capeless brought Malt home on a groundout to second. Sean Baumann singled up the middle on a 2-0 count for his eighth RBI of the season, good for fourth on the team.
Georgetown grabbed one more run in the ninth for the final score. Tommy Lee and Malt hit back-to back singles and a Fernandez groundout moved the respective runners to second and third. Sean Lamont's team-leading 17th RBI came during the next at-bat; a single to center that gave the Hoyas their fourth run.
The Hoyas had more opportunities to do damage in the third, fourth and sixth innings. The team got lead-off doubles in the third and sixth, but stranded those runners on third both times. Georgetown had the bases loaded in the fourth but could not produce a run.
Bobby Kirby took the loss for the Blue & Gray as he didn't finish the third inning after starting the game. Tommy Isaacs allowed one earned run over the next 5 1/3 innings to keep Georgetown in the game and drop his ERA to 3.46. Pablo Vinent pitched a perfect ninth in his second relief outing of the season.
The Hoyas play Maine tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
