2009 WNIT Bracket 
Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad has earned a berth in the Women's National Invitation Tournament the selection committee announced late Monday evening. The Hoyas were awarded a spot in the tournament which features 48 squads including 31 that earned an automatic bid as the top finishers in their respective conferences not going to the NCAA Tournament. GU will face Winthrop University in the opening round on Friday, March 20 at McDonough Arena at 7:30 p.m. Georgetown finished the season with a 17-13 overall record and a 7-9 mark in the BIG EAST to tie for ninth place.
The berth marks the first time the Hoyas have played beyond the BIG EAST Tournament under Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. The last time Georgetown was in the WNIT was the 2002-03 season where the team fell to Richmond, 79-63, in the opening round. The Hoyas had a 15-14 overall record that year.
Under Williams-Flournoy, Georgetown has steadily improved over the past five seasons. GU finished the regular season tied for ninth in the BIG EAST and went into the tournament with the tenth seed before falling to Seton Hall.
The Hoyas are 1-0 all-time versus the Eagles. Their last meeting was on a neutral court at the VPI Tournament during the 1979-80 season. In that game Georgetown came away with the 91-80 victory. This year, Winthrop finished with a 16-15 overall record and received the automatic berth into the WNIT from the Big South.
Georgetown has appeared in four WNIT's posting a 1-4 record in the tournament. GU's last WNIT win came in 2000-01 against George Mason, 66-56. The Hoyas fell to James Madison in the next game and finished the season with a 17-15 overall record.
Friday marks the first-ever WNIT game to be hosted at McDonough Arena by the Hoyas. The winner of Friday's contest will play at Wake Forest in the second round on Sunday.
The BIG EAST had six teams earn berths in the WNIT as well as seven squads receive invitations to the NCAA Tournament meaning 13 of 16 teams will play beyond the conference tournament.
Tickets will be available through the Georgetown University Athletic Ticket Office, prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children age 14 and under as well as Georgetown and Winthrop students.
