Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team lost their BIG EAST opener on Friday afternoon to the Louisville Cardinals, 8-3. The preseason pick for conference supremacy used a strong pitching performance to down the Hoyas at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The Hoyas were unable to get a runner into scoring position during the first five innings against lefty Justin Marks, the BIG EAST preseason selection for Pitcher of the Year. Marks pitched seven innings and struck out Georgetown batters en route to the win.
The Hoyas broke through against Marks in the sixth when Tom Elliott singled to center and advanced to second on a comebacker to the mound. Senior Tommy Lee drew a walk and a double-steal moved both runners up a base. With runners on second and third, Chip Malt singled through the right side to put GU on the board. However, consecutive strikeouts ended the inning
GU added two runs in the ninth off the Cardinal bullpen. Sean Lamont hit a ground-rule double with one out and with two outs, Dan Capeless kept two things alive with a single through the right side, his current six-game hitting streak and the game itself. Next, Kelly Muir continued his solid week in the batters box with a two-run triple to right field. The senior is batting .364 with six runs batted over the last three games.
Junior Tim Adleman allowed only two earned runs over seven innings, while striking out five. However, he took the loss after five unearned runs were scored against him. Junior Cary Piligian pitched an inning of relief for the Blue & Gray.
The Hoyas and Cardinals will resume their best-of-three series tomorrow at 1 p.m. from U of L's Jim Patterson Stadium.
