Georgetown Sinks Navy, 10-6

March 25, 2009

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team took the two-game season series with Navy this afternoon in Annapolis, Md., 10-6. The Hoyas turned in a balanced offensive attack as eight players scored and seven players accumulated RBI's in the fifth-straight win over the U.S. Naval Academy.

GU went ahead for good with a six-run third, thanks in large part to two two-run singles from Sean Lamont and Dan Godefroi. Trailing 2-1, the inning got going when Andy Lentz doubled on a 2-0 pitch into the right-center gap and Tommy Lee followed with a single through the left side on a 2-0 count. Lee then moved to second after stealing his 15th base of the season. Erick Fernandez hit a grounder to third with one out, but Lentz and Lee retreated and the Midshipmen had no play at first, loading the bases for Lamont.

The sophomore placed a two-run single up the middle before Baumann singled to right field and Godefroi singled through the left side to bring home two more Hoyas. With two outs, Rob Begin doubled his RBI total for the season with a single to left-center and after a pitching change, Lentz stepped up for the second time in the inning and doubled into right-center. Godefroi came home to make the score 7-2, but Begin was gunned down at the plate on a nice relay throw from second base.

Tim Adleman got the start for the Blue and Gray, striking out four over three innings and exiting with a 7-3 lead. . Since he was on a pitch count, Adleman earned the victory, his first of the season. Godefroi moved from first base to the pitchers mound in the fourth, throwing two innings of work and Bobby Kirby entered in the sixth to throw an inning. Billy Concannon took over in the seventh and closed it out for his first save as a Hoya. The junior threw three innings of two-hit, shutout baseball.

After falling behind 2-0, Sean Baumann led-off the second inning with a solo home run, his second of the season.

In the sixth, with the lead cut to 7-5, Lentz walked and stole second. With two outs, Tom Elliott doubled to left-center for a RBI and Fernandez knocked a run-scoring single to right.

Leading 9-6 in the ninth, the Hoyas pushed another run across to get a four-run cushion. Pinch-hitter Chip Malt singled through the right side and moved over to third on a foul-out to right and a groundout. Kelly Muir hit a grounder to the Navy third baseman to seemingly end the inning, but the throw was errant and Malt scored for a 10-6 advantage.

Georgetown is now 6-0 this season when they score 10 or more runs.

The Hoyas open their BIG EAST home schedule this Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. against St. John's.
