Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team was swept by South Florida on Saturday, 7-2. Sophomores Dan Capeless (Centerville, Mass./Boston College H.S.) and Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) provided the scoring for Georgetown on the afternoon. Both players hit solo shots which accounted for their fourth home runs of the season. The Hoyas fell to 10-22, 3-9 in the BIG EAST, while the Bulls moved into a tie for first place in the conference at 10-2, 22-11 overall.
Capeless and Fernandez led-off the second and sixth innings respectively with their round-trippers and combined for three of the team's six hits on the day.
Tim Adleman (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) started the game for the Hoyas and threw almost 100 pitches in his five and one-third innings. The junior fell to 2-5 on the season. Jack Bender (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) provided two and two-third innings relief before Billy Concannon (Dallas, Texas/St. Mark's School) closed the game with a shutout ninth.
USF starter Derrick Stultz pitched seven innings to earn the win and struck out a season-high 10 batters. Rightfielder Stephen Hunt finished the day only one-for-four but scored twice and drove in three. His fourth home run of the season, a solo shot in the fifth inning, provided the winning run in the contest.
The Hoyas return to the diamond on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. when they host the George Mason Patriots at Shirley Povich Field.
