WASHINGTON, D.C. - Jennifer Connell (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) allowed just one run on two hits over 7.0 complete innings to lead the Georgetown University softball team (11-25) over UMBC, 2-1 on Thursday afternoon at Guy Mason Field. The Hoyas have now won two of the last three games over the Retrievers in the seven game all-time series.
Kristi Preuss (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) and Samantha Peters (Suwanee, Ga./Collins Hill) each drove in a run in a decisive fifth inning to help Georgetown defeat Stephanie Weigman and the Retrievers.
UMBC's Alison Duff led off the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run, breaking a scoreless tie, putting the Retriever's in front 1-0.
The Hoyas answered in the bottom of the fifth inning, as McKinley Cooper (McLean, Va./Langley) led off with a double to left center field. With one out Kelsie Hanson (Katy, Texas/Katy) drew a walk and everyone moved up a base when Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs Fla./Coral Springs Charter) singled past the edge of the infield. Preuss tied the score blooping a hit into shallow centerfield and Peters gave the Hoyas a 2-1 lead with a sacrifice fly to deep left allowing Hanson to cross the plate.
From there Connell held the Retrievers hitless, securing her ninth win of the season. Weigman took the loss for UMBC.
Georgetown returns to the field on Sunday, April 19 when they begin a doubleheader with University of Connecticut at 11 a.m. at Guy Mason Field.
