April 18, 2009

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team dropped their second-straight game to UConn in BIG EAST play this afternoon, 10-2. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 10-24, 3-11 in conference play, and the Huskies improve to 21-15, 8-6 in the league.

For the second day in a row, Georgetown opened the scoring and took a 1-0 lead over the Huskies. Tommy Lee (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac/Winthrop) returned to the lineup and was promptly plunked, moved to second on a groundout by Chip Malt (Boston, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols) and scored on a single through the right side by sophomore Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah)

After tying the game in the bottom half of the first, the Huskies scored four runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings to take complete control of the game, 9-1. Elliot Glynn earned his third win of the season by striking out seven Hoyas over seven innings. The sophomore left-hander allowed two earned runs on six hits, improving to 3-4 on the year. UConn first baseman Mike Nemeth did the most damage at the plate for the home team, going 3-for-5 with five RBI's.

The Hoyas picked up their second run of the ball game in the eighth inning. Andy Lentz (Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) singled to right field and Lee followed with a single up the middle. A third consecutive base-hit from Malt scored Lentz during the next at-bat. With the chance to tack on more runs as runners stood at first and second with no outs, Fernandez hit into a fielder's choice, Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) flew out and Sean Baumann (Tampa, Fla./Freedom) fouled out to end the frame.

Will Harris (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) took the hill for the Hoyas and allowed eight earned runs over 5.1 innings while striking out four. Pablo Vinent (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit), Dan Godefroi (Andover, Mass./Andover) and Billy Concannon (Dallas, Texas/St. Mark's School) pitched the final 2.2 innings in relief, allowing two earned runs and striking out three batters.

Georgetown and UConn will close their series tomorrow with first pitch slated for noon.
