Saris and Isaacs Lead Hoyas Past UConn, 5-2

April 19, 2009

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team received solid pitching performances from senior Jimmy Saris (Great Falls, Va./Langley) and sophomore Tommy Isaacs (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Bolles).during a 5-2 win at UConn this afternoon. Saris struck out six batters over six innings to earn his team-leading third win of the season and Isaacs earned his first career save in a GU uniform, allowing no runs and only two hits in three innings of relief.

After falling behind, the Hoyas took the lead in the third. Kelly Muir (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola) walked and Andy Lentz (Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) reached on a fielder's- choice bunt. With two on, Chip Malt (Boston, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols) laid down a sacrifice bunt and pushed the runners to second and third. Tommy Lee (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) was able to bring them both home as he hit his first triple of the season down the left-field line for a 2-1 lead.

The three-bagger bumped Lee's hit streak up to nine games, his longest of the season. However, he still has a way to go before he can catch Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) who had a 24-game hit streak earlier this season.

Georgetown added to their lead the next inning, tacking on three more runs for a 5-1 lead. Tom Elliott (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) singled through the left side and advanced to second on a passed ball. Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) drew a walk and Greg Pustizzi (Medford, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) singled to left field for a two-run lead. A wild pitch moved runners to second and third before Muir dropped down a bunt to first base. The safety squeeze would score Lamont and Lentz closed the scoring on a RBI ground-out to short during the next at-bat.

Georgetown returns to action this Tuesday night at Shirley Povich Field. The Hoyas will host UMBC at 7 p.m.
