April 26, 2009

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - Chip Malt (Boston, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols) tied a Georgetown season-high with four hits but the Georgetown University baseball team was swept this afternoon at Seton Hall, 6-5. The Hoyas trailed by three runs entering the ninth but were unable to tie things up against the Pirates and fell to 11-29, 4-14 in the BIG EAST.

The Hoyas fell behind 2-0 before breaking their scoreless slide in the third inning. With two outs, Andy Lentz (Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) reached on an error by the Seton Hall second baseman. Tommy Lee (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) followed with a single through the right side that moved Lentz across the diamond to third. Malt followed with his RBI, a single up the middle to cut the deficit in half.

Seton Hall added a run before GU was able to score again, this time during the sixth inning, to trim the lead to 3-2. Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) doubled down the left-field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Sean Baumann (Tampa, Fla./Freedom).

Georgetown continued to stay close by scoring another run after the Pirates had regained a two-run lead. In the seventh, a lead-off double to left off the bat of Greg Pustizzi (Medford, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) got things going. A sacrifice bunt by Lentz moved Pustizzi to third and Lee hit a ground ball to second, which resulted in an out, but also scored the run and sliced the lead to, 4-3.

After the Pirates tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 6-3 lead, GU tried to stage some late-game heroics. Seton Hall brought in their closer Matt Singer and with one out, Lentz singled through the left side. After another quick out, Malt collected his fourth hit with a single up the middle. Fernandez followed with a RBI single to left to make the score, 6-4. Next, Baumann hit a grounder to third that SHU's Sean Gusrang errantly threw which allowed Malt to score, lowering the lead to one. After an intentional walk to Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) loaded the bases, Dan Godefroi (Andover, Mass./Andover) flied out to end the game.

Hoya starter Jimmy Saris (Great Falls, Va./Langley) lasted only five innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits. Jared Cohen (Phoenixville, Pa./The Haverford School) recorded the final five outs of the game for the Blue & Gray, striking out two of the batters he faced.

Joe DiRocco earned the win for the Pirates, improving to 4-3 by throwing seven solid innings and allowing two earned runs on eight hits. Also for Seton Hall, eight of their nine batters recorded a hit and five different players scored and drove in a run.

Georgetown resumes play when they return home for a Tuesday afternoon contest against Norfolk State at 4 p.m. The game starts the final homestand of the season for the Hoyas as they will play eight games in 13 days.
