Washington, D.C. - Georgetown (16-33, 7-17 BE) had their season-high three-game winning streak snapped this afternoon, losing 7-2 at Rutgers (21-30, 7-18 BE). Despite falling to the Scarlet Knights for the 11th consecutive time, Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) had another multi-RBI contest for the Hoyas and Jimmy Saris (Great Falls, Va./Langley) rebounded from his last outing by allowing only two runs on four hits through the first six innings before struggling in the late innings.
On the day, Saris went 7 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. The senior walked four and struck out three batters in quite possibly, his final start for GU. Saris was opposed by Willie Beard, who was coming off his first BIG EAST career victory and a weekly honor roll selection. The freshman starter went a career-high eight innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits while walking two and striking out five. Scarlet Knights third baseman D.J. Anderson 3-for-4 with two RBI's on two singles and a double in support of Beard.
GU drew first blood with a run in the first. With one out, Chip Malt (Boston, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols) walked and Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) singled through the left-side. After a wild pitch moved both runners up a base, Lamont picked up a RBI on a groundout to third
Rutgers answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning without recording a hit and the middle innings progressed rapidly as neither team was able to figure things out at the plate. In fact, the Georgetown offense only mustered three hits during the seven innings they were held scoreless. RU tacked on a run in the seventh for a 3-1 lead before Georgetown rediscovered their scoring.
In the eighth, Malt singled through the left side with one out to extend his hitting streak to a season-high 10 games. Fernandez hit a grounder to first for the second out but Malt moved into scoring position on the play. Then, Lamont picked up his second RBI of the afternoon with a base-hit down the left-field line
Trailing 3-2, Saris could not maintain his edge on the mound that he had held throughout the first seven innings. He began to struggle and allowed two runs and getting only one out before being lifted. When the frame came to a close, the Scarlet Knights had taken control, 7-2.
The teams play the second game of their series tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
