Washington, D.C. - Georgetown University women's basketball Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy has been named the Georgetown University Coach of the Year by The Hoya, one of the student-run newspapers on campus. The Hoyas were 20-14 this season and advanced to the Women's National Invitation Tournament Quarterfinals marking one of the best seasons in recent memory.
In her fifth season on the Hilltop, Williams-Flournoy led the squad to its first 20-win season since 1992-93 and the first WNIT appearance since 2002-03. Georgetown also tied for ninth in the BIG EAST with a 7-9 mark in conference play. The league changed the format of the BIG EAST Tournament to include all 16 teams, nevertheless, even with the previous seasons' rules the Hoyas would have qualified for the tournament which would have been just the second time ever under Williams-Flournoy.
Georgetown was one of the youngest squads in the nation with a nationally-ranked recruiting class made up of seven freshmen. Combined with some emerging upperclassmen, the Hoyas turned into one of the most surprising squads in the BIG EAST.
The Hoyas will lose three seniors to graduation including leading scorer, Karee Houlette (Houston, Texas/Cypress Springs). However, GU will welcome three freshmen including McDonald's All-American TaShauna "Suga" Rodgers who was recently named the Associated Press Group AAA Virginia State Player of the Year.
Williams-Flournoy has steadily improved the Hoya program almost every season. This year's run to the WNIT Quarterfinals showed a talented young group peaking at the right time of the season. Throughout the season, the Hoyas had some big wins including a victory over WNIT Champs South Florida and a pair of victories against Syracuse. In the postseason, Georgetown defeated Winthrop, Wake Forest and Richmond en route to the quarterfinals.
This is the first coach of the year honor for Williams-Flournoy. She was an assistant coach at a number of institutions for 12 seasons before coming to Georgetown in 2004.
