WASHINGTON, D.C. - Georgetown University softball coach Pat Conlan has announced the hiring of Erica Ayers, who will join the program as an assistant coach. Ayers joins the Hoyas after spending her previous nine years as an assistant softball coach at George Mason University.
At Georgetown, Ayers main responsibilities will be developing the Hoyas' hitters and infielders. She will also serve as the recruiting coordinator.
"I couldn't be more pleased with the addition of Erica to our staff," Conlan said. "She brings a tremendous amount of experience as a player and coach to the Hilltop. She has proven herself to be a hard worker and a great teacher. I am excited to see the impact Erica will have on the Hoyas."
At George Mason, Ayers assisted in all aspects of the program, focusing her on-field efforts on working with the team's hitters and infielders, while serving as the team's camp director and travel coordinator off the field. Ayers helped develop one Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, seven first team All CAA selections and six second team All CAA selections. Additionally, she has helped develop two Virginia Players of the Year, two first team All Mid-Atlantic Region players and two second team all region selections.
Prior to joining the Patriots' coaching staff, Ayers spent four seasons, three as team captain, at second base and shortstop for GMU. She started 189 games and finished her career with a .286 batting average, 25 doubles and 66 RBI. During her senior season in 2000, Ayers led the team with a .343 batting average, and was second on the squad with 25 RBI. She holds the Patriots single-season record for games played (63) and times being hit-by-pitch (16), and is fourth with 59 hits. After college, Ayers was selected as an Amateur Softball Association of America first team women's class B All American (ASA) shortstop in 2001. In 2003, Ayers was a member of the ASA women's class A Virginia Legends national championship team.
The Ashland, Va. native graduated from George Mason in 2000 with a bachelors of sciences in health, fitness and recreational resources. She earned her masters in exercise, fitness and health promotion from GMU in 2008.
