Georgetown Crew Captain Jack Carlson Awarded Allbritton Fellowship

Aug. 19, 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Former Georgetown University men's crew captain Jack Carlson was awarded the Allbritton Scholarship, as he will continue his studies at Brasenose College, one of the 39 constituent colleges of the University of Oxford, in the fall. Carlson, a four-year coxswain on the men's crew graduated from the college in 2009. Carlson will be pursuing his master's in World Archaeology.

"I feel so fortunate to be named the Allbritton Scholar this year," Carlson said. "Georgetown has afforded me so many opportunities, and the Allbritton is one of them."

The Allbritton Scholarship, established in 1984 is awarded to one Georgetown student for one year of post-baccalaureate study in any academic program offered at Brasenose College, University of Oxford. Requirements for consideration are a grade point average (GPA) above or approaching 3.9. The student must have also applied for either the Rhodes or Marshall scholarships and have been offered an interview.

"I hope to continue studying the archaeology and history of ancient Rome and ancient China, including in a comparative context," Carlson said. "I was lucky to have the guidance and support of Georgetown professors Osgood, Keesling, Kafalas, Glavin and others in studying these topics on the Hilltop. The World Archaeology program at Oxford is ideal for what I want to study; they have the top scholars in the field, and the course is flexible enough to let me choose subjects in Roman and Chinese archaeology."

In addition to his studies, Carlson hopes to continue his passion for rowing in one of the world's most celebrated programs.

"The university squad is extremely competitive there, with many of the rowers having competed at World or Olympic Championships," Carlson said. "The thought of training with those guys and trying to earn a spot in a boat with them is very exciting."
