Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's soccer team earned two BIG EAST awards after the first week of competition. Junior defender Michaela Buonomo (Churchville, Pa/Council Rock) was named Defensive Player of the Week and goalkeeper Jackie DesJardin (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) was named to the Weekly Honor Roll.
Buonomo put GU on the board for the 2009 season with a powerful header off a corner-kick from junior Caitlin Durkee (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park). The goal was the fifth of Buonomo's career and proved to be the game-winner. Her defense was also critical n the middle of the pitch during Saturday's season-opening win over American.
DesJardin recorded her 17th career shutout with five saves. Two crucial stops on AU's Kelsey Brasher and Michelle Montilio during the second half kept the Georgetown advantage intact. Going back to last season, DesJardin has blanked four-straight regular season opponents
The team returns to action on Friday afternoon, August 28th, when they travel to American for the D.C. Invitational. Georgetown will play Bryant College at 1 p.m.
