WASHINGTON - Featuring 19 games with opponents who appeared in postseason tournaments last season and trips to play in the Jimmy V Classic and the John Wooden Classic, the 2009-10 Georgetown University Men's Basketball schedule was released on Thursday afternoon. Highlights also include games with two Final Four teams (Connecticut and Villanova) as well as a home game against Duke.
Among 20 nationally-televised games, the Hoyas will appear twice on CBS, first on Jan. 30 when GU plays Duke at Verizon Center, and again on Feb. 27 in a BIG EAST Conference matchup with Notre Dame. Georgetown will also make 11 appearances on ESPN and will also be seen on Fox Sports.
Georgetown's home slate of BIG EAST opponents will open on Thursday, Dec. 31 when the Hoyas host St. John's at Verizon Center (ESPN2). Other early home BIG EAST contests will include Connecticut (31-4, NCAA Final Four) on Jan. 9 (ESPN), Seton Hall on Jan. 14 (ESPN), as well as Rutgers on Jan. 23 (ESPN).
Conference play continues in the second month of 2010 with a game against South Florida on Feb. 3, followed by Villanova (30-7, NCAA Final Four) on Feb. 6 (ESPN), as well as Syracuse (28-10, NCAA) on Feb. 18 (ESPN), Notre Dame (21-15, NIT) on Feb. 27 (CBS) and will conclude with Cincinnati on March 6.
BIG EAST road matchups begin on Jan. 3 at DePaul and a game at Marquette (25-10, NCAA) on Jan. 6. After returning home for two games, the Hoyas play three of their next four games on the road - at Villanova (30-7, NCAA Final Four) on Jan. 17, at Pittsburgh (31-5, NCAA) on Jan. 20 (ESPNU) and at Syracuse (28-10, NCAA) on Jan. 25 (ESPN).
The Hoyas will play four of their final seven conference games on the road, with dates at Providence (19-14, NIT) on Feb. 9 (ESPN2), at Rutgers on Feb. 14, at Louisville (31-6, NCAA) on Feb. 23 (ESPN2) and at West Virginia (23-12, NCAA) on March 1 (ESPN).
Other highlighted games this year include playing in the Jimmy V Classic on Dec. 8 against Butler (26-6, NIT) at Madison Square Garden in New York City and then a trip out West to play the University of Washington (26-9, NCAA) in the John Wooden Classic on Dec. 12. The Jimmy V Classic will air live on ESPN, while the John Wooden Classic will be broadcast by Fox Sports.
ESPN.com's Andy Katz recognized Georgetown's non-conference schedule as among the strongest in the country: "John Thompson III continues to change the scheduling philosophy at Georgetown. Maybe more so than any other Big East school, Georgetown is preparing for the league's regular season by putting itself in position to have a conference-like week in early December."
Georgetown opens the season on Nov. 13 at Tulane and returns for its home opener on Nov. 17, hosting Temple (21-12, NCAA) at Verizon Center on ESPN/ESPN2. The Hoyas play at Savannah State on Nov. 21 before returning home for three-straight non-conference games. GU will match up against Lafayette on Nov. 28, then host Mount St. Mary's on Nov. 30 and local rival American (24-8, NCAA) on Dec. 5. Following the game at the John Wooden Classic, the team will play two final non-league games, first against Old Dominion (25-10) at McDonough Arena on Dec. 19 and then hosting Harvard at Verizon Center on Dec. 23.
