Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's tennis team won nine singles matches over the first two rounds of the annual Georgetown Classic at the McDonough Tennis Complex on Friday. Bryan Miller and David Tillem advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament with consecutive victories.
Miller topped Gorkem Yurtseven of Penn, 6-3, 6-2 and Erik Hannah of GW, 6-0, 7-6 (2), while Tillem defeated Lucas Andreika of Penn, 6-3, 6-3 and Mike Smith from James Madison, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Four other Hoyas earned victories to advance to the second round on Friday, Will Lowell, Michael Clarke, Anthony Tan and Tim Walsh. Lowell earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tonique Merrel of Howard, Clarke picked up a 6-1, 7-6 (5) win over Richard Blumenfeld of GW, Tan topped Matt King of JMU, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 and Walsh was a 7-6 (3), 6-1 victor over Zach Gorn of Penn.
Andrew Bruhn, after dropping his first-round match, won in the consolation bracket, 6-4, 6-2 over JMU's King.
In doubles play, Tillem and Walsh teamed up for a thrilling 9-8 (4) win over Blumenfeld and Arya Vaghan of GW. The Hoya duo joined their teammates' pairings of Miller/Clarke and Bruhn/Caris. The second GU combo earned a victory over Dmitri Bury and Andreika from Penn, 8-6.
