South Orange, N.J. - The Georgetown University women's soccer team (7-2-2, 1-1-1) fought back to earn a 1-1 draw on Sunday at Seton Hall (4-5-1, 0-2-1). Junior Caitlin Durkee (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) tied the game with 13 minutes remaining on a thunderous strike, her third goal of the season. Sophomore Kelly D'Ambrisi (Trumbull, Conn./Lauralton Hall Academy) picked up the assist.
After falling behind in the first half, Georgetown dominated play by out-shooting the Pirates 12-0 in the second half. The Hoyas also amassed eight corner-kick opportunities in the second stanza.
Some key moments saw SHU goalkeeper Jennifer Pettigrew make consecutive saves on Samantha Baker (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson) and Norah Swanson (Alamo, Calif./San Ramon Valley). Michaela Buonomo (Churchville, Pa/Council Rock) send a header just over the crossbar, and D'Ambrisi, Durkee and Camille Trujillo (Albuquerque, N.M./St. Pius X) all having chances blocked by SHU defenders.
Defender Claire Magliola (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) made a number of good plays to preserve Georgetown possessions in the second half and was almost rewarded with the game-winning goal. However, her shot with less than five minutes remaining glanced off the right post. Ingrid Wells (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) had the Hoyas' best chance in overtime but it was not to be on this day.
SHU went ahead in the first half as defender Megan Mills scored her first goal of the season, heading in a corner-kick from Nicki Gross. The Pirates came out strong and held an 8-3 advantage in shots at the intermission.
The Hoyas remain on the road next weekend when they play at Providence on Friday afternoon and UConn on Sunday afternoon.
