WASHINGTON - Georgetown University junior guard Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) was named to the BIG EAST Conference's Weekly Honor Roll after his performance in a pair of games last week.
The Hoyas improved to 12-2 overall and 3-1 in the BIG EAST Conference with a thrilling 72-69 win over then No. 13 Connecticut in front of more than 15,000 fans at Verizon Center. Georgetown trailed by 19 points in the half and by 15 points in the second half before coming back for the victory.
Georgetown moved up one spot in both national polls this week, appearing at No. 11 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll and No. 11 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches' poll.
Freeman averaged 26.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and shot 54.5 percent from the floor (18-of-33), 53.8 percent from three-point land (7-of-13) and hit 100 percent of his free throws (10-of-10) as the Hoyas split a pair of games last week.
On Saturday, Freeman erupted for a career-high 33 points in Georgetown's 72-69 win over then No. 13 Connecticut. Freeman scored 28 of his points in the second half, nearly out-scoring UConn on his own in the second half (Freeman 28, UConn 29).
He set a career-high for field goals (12) and tied his career-high of five 3-pointers, adding seven rebounds, three steals and two assists. His 33 points are the second-most scored by a Georgetown player under John Thompson III and it was only the third game by a Hoya player with at least 30 points since 2004-05.
Earlier in the week, Freeman scored a game-high 21 points and tied his career-high with six assists in a 62-59 loss at Marquette.
Through 14 games, Freeman leads the Hoyas in scoring, and ranks 16th in the BIG EAST, with 15.4 points per game. He is averaging 3.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. In addition, Freeman leads the team, and the BIG EAST Conference, connecting on 94.7 percent of his free throw attempts (36-of-38).
In four conference games, Freeman ranks fourth in the BIG EAST, averaging 21.3 points per game.
Georgetown returns to action again on Thursday, Jan. 14, hosting BIG EAST rival Seton Hall at Verizon Center. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. The game will be shown live on ESPN, with Mike Patrick and Len Elmore calling the action. The game can be heard locally on ESPN 980 AM.
