Don’t Make My Mistake
Ahhhh the Dukies. Hard to believe it was four years ago that YouTube was overtaken by Hoyas chanting in the streets of D.C. and the “Hoyas Beat Duke 87 – 84” t-shirt was born. While the Chicago Hoyas do represent, I have to say that my experience on January 21, 2006 was probably not as exciting as what I heard in the background on my dad’s cell phone, as he stood live and in person post victory in the Verizon Center. Still, being that it was my first year after graduation, I wanted to make sure I at least watched the match-up…and I am glad that I did.
I braved the Chi-town winter elements and headed north to our local game-watch watering hole (which has flags for just about every Midwest university hanging…it now has a Gtown banner as well). We had a pretty solid crowd of 15 – 20, all decked in blue and gray, ready to cheer on our boys whatever the outcome might be. When we won, it was quite amusing to observe the non- Gtown fans in the bar, as they were extremely confused and had no concept of what a momentous occasion this really was…but perhaps the highlight of the day was my fellow Gtown grad, who drove in from St. Louis to spend the weekend with the Chicago crew, and proceeded to request (actually demand) to buy the entire bar a round of beers.
The down side to this whole experience, however, was that I considered flying home for the game as I had been offered a ticket…but I declined because I didn't want to be disappointed with a loss (I know, I know…in the words of Napoleon Dynamite, “IDIOT!”)
For all of you who have been blessed with the opportunity to view tomorrow’s match-up, you better represent all of us who will be in their local hole in the wall establishment…and if you passed up the chance to fly to DC tomorrow, don’t say I didn’t tell you.
