ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands (AP) - The Georgetown University women's basketball team lost its first game of the season Friday evening as the Hoyas fell to the University of Missouri Tigers (2-2), 54-45, at the Paradise Jam hosted by Basketball Travelers, Inc., and the University of the Virgin Islands. The Hoyas struggled from the field and on the boards to drop to 4-1 on the season.
After trailing by as much as five in the first half, Georgetown managed to keep it close in the second. At 11:51, a layup from Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) tied it at 33 marking the fifth tie of the game. An and-one from Rodgers as well as a basket from freshman Andrea White (Lancaster, Va./Lancaster) put the Blue & Gray ahead by three just seconds later. Unfortunately, a 7-0 Missouri run ended Georgetown's momentum.
Missouri moved ahead by as much as 11 and although the Hoyas forced turnovers down the stretch, it wasn't enough as the squad fell, 54-45.
Rodgers led the Blue & Gray with 13 points, while senior Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) added 10. Tia Magee (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) playing in her second game back from a knee injury over the summer, managed five points and a team-high eight assists.
Georgetown was outrebounded and shot just 32.8 percent for the game. The Blue & Gray wasn't without opportunities with just nine turnovers to Mizzou's 21.
The Hoyas will conclude the Paradise Jam on Saturday evening as the squad takes on No. 4 Tennessee at 9 p.m. ET. Live stats and a webcast are available at www.GUHoyas.com.
