Georgetown Head Coach John Thompson III
On Austin Freeman's shooting performance... It was not that abnormal to tell you the truth. He might break (the school record for three-pointers in a game) before the year is over. He was hot, his teammates did a good job of getting him the ball and when he put it up it went in.
On the team's defensive performance... We without a doubt had some lulls that just talked about just now in the locker room. That's one of the things when you go through and are trying to get experience for guys and as a coach you want them to fight through those situations... Once we were working on all cylinders, once we were focused at both ends of the court I think we did a pretty good job of not letting them get what they wanted.
On UNC-Asheville's guards... They have very good guards, they are aggressive, they run everything for them and they execute well. They went through a stretch in the second half where our post players were not helping our perimeter players enough with all of those screens, but overall we did ok.
On the team's three point shooting... I don't have a percentage in my head, like we should be at this percentage on attempts. On a game to game basis we have an experienced enough group now where they have a feel for when they are taking too many threes. I don't think too many of those if any were bad shots.
On Chris Wright's performance... If you look at the stat sheet I think that number four did a good job of getting number 15 shots. Chris was penetrating in there and kicking it out to open shooters, he got Hollis shots, he got Austin shots. His turnover number is misleading, because a lot of those were dropped balls, but I thought a lot of the threes that we got were off penetration, where Chris was able to suck the defense into him and kick to open shooters.
On Hollis Thompson... People say he's playing the power forward, but the way our offense is it's interchangeable. Hollis spends time in the backcourt, Chris spends time in the post. Outside of the center, the other four spots are interchangeable...The only place it comes into effect is on the defensive side of the court where he's had to guard some bigs. We've been quick to get Jerrelle and Nate in there...To answer your question Hollis makes shots. He has teammates that can get him shots. He is starting to realize that he can be effective on a lot of different things on the court. It's a growth on his part.
Player Quotes
Senior guard Austin Freeman
On his 32-point performance...
I just wanted to be aggressive, come out and take good shots and don't force anything. I hit a couple and my teammates found me. The way we are as a team is when someone's hot you find him.
On the feeling of getting open shots...
It's good knowing that when you're open your teammates can find you. You just have to knock them down.
Senior guard Chris Wright
On not letting down after a successful tournament and the Thanksgiving break...
I think it's important how we came out. We jumped on them early, but we all know we have to withstand that. We had a few lapses in the first and second half so we know we have to improve on that. During BIG EAST play it's going to be critical because there have been times when teams have come back and runaway in games.
Senior forward Julian Vaughn
On being overlooked...
I try not to focus on the individual things. It's not a secret we have a whole lot of explosive talent in the backcourt. So whenever we can exploit it we can. My main thing is every game I want to go out rebound, block shots and be a presence and just do what I have to win.
On UNC-Asheville...
Coach says every good team makes runs. I felt like in the second half when they were making their runs and their guards were getting off a little bit and making some big shots. We called a time out and had to refocus. There was still a lot of time left, the game wasn't over. After that we came out and really just wanted to put it on them and put the game away.
