WASHINGTON - Georgetown senior Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after his performance in the team's win last week.
The Hoyas improved to 6-0 overall with an 87-72 win over UNC-Asheville on Saturday at Verizon Center.
Freeman led Georgetown to its sixth-straight win by scoring 32 points, falling one point shy of his career high. He connected on 11-of-15 shots from the field, including 7-of-9 from three-point land.
His seven shots from three-point land tied a school record, held by Mark Tillmon (vs. Providence, 2/13/90) and Darrel Owens (vs. South Carolina, 3/24/05).
The senior guard leads Georgetown in scoring, and ranks third in the BIG EAST Conference, with 20.2 points per game. Freeman's 32 points gave him 1,318 for his career and he now needs 22 more points to pass Jeff Green (2004-07) for 18th on the all-time scoring list on the Hilltop. His seven three-pointers gave him 144 for his career, which is eighth all-time. Freeman needs two more to pass DaJuan Summers (2006-09) for seventh and five more to pass Jessie Sapp (2005-09) for sixth all-time.
This is the second-straight week a Hoya player has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Last week, senior guard Chris Wright (Bowie, Md./St. John's College H.S.) was named after earning Most Valuable Player honors when Georgetown won the Charleston Classic. Wright averaged 15.7 points and 8.0 assists in three games, including a career-high 12 assists in the team's win over Coastal Carolina.
Georgetown was ranked in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll and No. 14 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches' poll. The Hoyas play No. 9/8 Missouri on Tuesday, Nov. 30 at the Sprint Center as part of the John McLendon Classic. The game will be shown live on ESPNU, with Dan McLaughlin and Doug Gottlieb calling all of the action, and can be heard locally on ESPN 980 AM.
