Battle of the Unbeatens
Quick... When was the last time Georgetown faced Missouri?
For all you longtime, devoted Hoya fans, this is probably an easy question to answer. It was 1982 when the Hoyas prevailed against the #4-ranked Tigers in a grueling match up at McDonough Arena. Could you imagine McDonough hosting a Top 5 team today? Now that would be quite the experience!
Just for kicks, let's take a glimpse back at 1982...
- ET was the top movie of 1982
- A gallon of milk cost $2.24
- 60 Minutes was the top rated show (I am sure no one then would think some myth of Reality TV would outshine a respected television news magazines)
- Michael Jackson releases a song called Thriller. You may have heard of it… total sales somewhere around the number of 25 million copies... big deal! (sarcastic undertone in that statement)
- Record of the Year, "Bette Davis Eyes," Kim Carnes... some one will need to brief me on this
- First class stamp cost $0.20
My how the times have changed! Fast forward to 2010 and it is hard to imagine that these two opponents match up for only the second time. Actually, in the long history of Hoya basketball, this is only the 7th time Georgetown faces a Big 12 opponent. Currently, both teams are ranked in the Top 25 and one team will leave the Kansas City with their first "L" of the season. Similar to Georgetown, Mizzou is coming off a successful pre-season tournament run, wining the Cancun Challenge. However, after being back on campus for a brief 72 hours and over 7,400 miles of travel, Mizzou has a tough task of facing off against one the best back courts in the nation: Freeman, Wright, and Clark.
Regardless of the current rankings, the veteran play of the Hoyas along with the toughness and determination demonstrated by seniors such as Austin Freeman and new comers such as Nate Lubick will outweigh the adversity of a spirited up and coming program and an enthusiastic Big 12 crowd.
Everyone tune in and gear up for a great pre-Big East match on ESPNU or ESPN 980 with the voice of the Hoyas, Rich Chvotkin. If the Hoyas play with the poise and collectiveness they have demonstrated early in this season, a Big East team will have another successful "W" against another BCS school.
Hoya Saxa!
