WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad will host Clemson University on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at McDonough Arena. The game marks the fifth this season against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent, the Blue & Gray is currently 3-1 against the ACC.
No. 19/18 Georgetown is 11-3 on the season after a 77-37 all-around victory at the University of Houston on Tuesday evening. Tia Magee (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) led all scorers in the game with 15 points going 8-of-9 from the line and pulling down five rebounds. Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) added 13 points and six boards, while Andrea White (Lancaster, Va./Lancaster) finished with eight points, including a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe, and a squad-high seven rebounds. Morgan Williams (Dickinson, Texas/Dickinson) had nine points and led the team with five assists and four steals in front of her hometown crowd.
Georgetown shot well from the line hitting 88.6 percent. The Hoyas also shot 37.5 percent from the field and outrebounded the Cougars, 54-36. The defense forced Houston into 18.4 percent shooting from the field and 27 turnovers.
Rodgers leads the Hoyas with 17.5 points per game and 33 steals. She is also averaging 4.8 rebounds per game, just ahead of Magee who is averaging 4.7 rebounds per game. Rubylee Wright (Latta, S.C./Latta) has recorded a team-high 69 assists on the season and is GU's third-leading scorer averaging 7.9 ppg behind Monica McNutt's (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross)10.6 ppg.
Additionally, on Tuesday Rodgers was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll after notching her first double-double of the season in the 73-52 victory over Coppin State. The sophomore had 22 points and ten rebounds along with seven assists and four steals. It marks her third nod to the honor roll this season.
Clemson is 6-7 this season after dropping its last contest to then-No. 23 Syracuse, 77-58, at the Sunshine Shootout in the Bahamas. Sthefany Thomas led the team with 17 points, while Lindsey Mason grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. The Tigers have lost their last five games with their last victory coming against Presbyterian College, 61-49, on December 5.
Thomas leads Clemson with 12.6 points per game, while Jasmine Tate averages 7.9 rebounds per game. Three players on the squad average more than 10 points per game.
The Hoyas are 2-1 all-time against the Tigers. Last season, the Blue & Gray defeated Clemson, 72-57, in South Carolina. Rodgers led Georgetown with 17 points, while McNutt added 13. GU shot 49.1 percent for the game and had 12 steals. The last meeting at McDonough Arena was during the 2005-06 season when the Hoyas downed the Tigers, 69-56.
