WASHINGTON - The No. 13/12 Georgetown University women's basketball squad begins a grueling week on Tuesday as the Hoyas take on the Villanova University Wildcats at The Pavilion. Georgetown is coming off of a huge win over No. 4/3 Notre Dame and the Hoyas' leading scorer Ta'Shauna "Sugar" Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. Tuesday's game marks the first of four in the next seven days and will be televised on CBS College Sports.
Rodgers averaged 20.0 ppg last week leading the Blue & Gray to a pair of victories. She scored 24 points in the win over Notre Dame also pulling down six rebounds and tallying three steals. In the victory against South Florida, Rodgers scored 16 points and had four rebounds for the all-around performance. This week marked her third nod to the Honor Roll this season.
Georgetown is 22-4 overall and 11-2 in the BIG EAST with three conference games remaining. The Hoyas have three players scoring in double-digits including junior Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) with 11.3 ppg and senior Jaleesa Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Alton) averaging 10.2 ppg as well as 6.4 rpg.
The Blue & Gray is currently tied for second in the BIG EAST standings but has yet to face No. 1/1 Connecticut. This season the Hoyas have hit 20 wins faster than any in program history and defeated four nationally ranked teams.
Villanova is 13-13 overall and 2-11 in BIG EAST play after suffering some early-season injuries. The Wildcats tallied their second conference victory of the year on Saturday with a 60-57 win over Cincinnati. VU trailed at the half but came back in the second to get the victory led by senior Maria Getty who had 17 points. Villanova's other conference win this season came against Syracuse, 83-69. Getty currently leads the `Cats with 11.7 ppg on the season.
Georgetown is 16-32 all-time against the Wildcats with the last win coming during the 2006-07 season at McDonough Arena. Georgetown is 4-20 on the road against Villanova with the last road win coming on December 31, 1997. Last year, on senior day at McDonough Arena, Georgetown led at the half but was outscored 36-27 in the second to fall 58-53. Butler led the way with 18 points.
The game will be broadcast live on CBS College Sports with Ann Schatz on the call and Tammy Blackburn commentating.
