WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's tennis team started Wednesday strong, handily defeating the Morgan State University Bears 7-0 at the McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex. Unfortunately, the day did not end as well as the Hoyas lost a heartbreaker to the Stony Brook University Seawolves, 5-2, dropping a number of close matches. GU now sits at 6-10 on the season with another home match on the schedule next week.
In the win over Morgan State, all three doubles teams won 8-3 to sweep the Bears and pick up the point. In singles play, at No. 3 Will Lowell (Nahant, Mass./Saddlebrook Prep) defeated Dmitry Chekhlatyy 6-1, 6-1. No. 4 Charlie Caris (Des Moines, Iowa/Theodore Roosevelt) also won 6-1, 6-1 as the Blue & Gray sailed to victory.
Stony Brook, however, was a different story. GU dropped its first two matches in doubles play, but the tandem of Caris and David Tillem (Atlanta, Ga./The Weber School) rallied to win 8-7 (5) in a tiebreaker. Tillem went on to win at No. 2 singles by a score of 6-4, 6-2.
Lowell played at No. 3 singles and won the first set 7-5 before falling in the second 7-5. In the third he wasn't able to come away with the victory narrowly losing 6-4 which cost Georgetown an important point. No. 6 Tim Walsh (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton) had a similar experience losing the first match 6-0 but getting a big win in the second 6-4 to force a third set. He battled, but eventually fell 7-5.
The Hoyas will have the weekend off before hosting Howard next Tuesday at 2 p.m.
