HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Georgetown University men's tennis team put up a fight, but couldn't get the final point in a close 4-3 loss to the James Madison University Dukes (15-8) Wednesday afternoon at the Hillside Tennis Courts. The Hoyas were swept in doubles play, but won three singles matches to come within one point of the victory in a number of close matches. The Blue & Gray is now 7-11 on the season.
Georgetown lost two tough matches in doubles play as the No. 2 tandem of Will Lowell (Nahant, Mass./Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)) and Anthony Tan (Jakarta, Indonesia/Anglo-Chinese Junior College) fell 8-6. At No. 3, David Tillem (Atlanta, Ga./The Weber School) and Charlie Caris (Des Moines, Iowa/Theodore Roosevelt) forced the tie breaker 8-7 (5).
Tan won in a marathon match at No. 2 singles 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4). Additionally, Lowell won at No. 4 (6-3, 6-2) and Andrew Bruhn (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) won in another three-set match at No. 5 (6-4, 2-6, 6-2). With three wins, it looked as if Georgetown would come away with the victory.
However, the decisive match was at No. 3 where Caris battled to the bitter end, but eventually fell 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4 giving the Dukes the 4-3 victory.
The Hoyas will have a day off before hosting back-to-back BIG EAST matches this weekend. GU will play Villanova at 1:30 p.m. on Friday and Connecticut at noon on Saturday.
