WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University Swimming & Diving team announced its 2010 recruiting class on Monday. The Hoyas will welcome 16 student-athletes to campus in the fall of 2010. Georgetown had a banner year with the women going 10-2 in dual meets and the men's team breaking five school records.
Shannon Donohue (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddon Township) was a four-year letter-winning diver at Haddon Township High School. She was named the Diver of the Year of her high school squad and also dove with Spinner Diving. Donohue was a four-year member of the state champion cross country team and was a member of the honor roll.
"Shannon will bring her immense talent and diving background to a strong group of returning female divers, improving our depth on both the 1-meter and 3-meter side" said Head Coach Steve Cartwright. "She could be a BIG EAST Qualifier on both boards in her first year. "
Allison Fulenwider (Rye, N.Y./Rye) swam breaststroke and competed in the IM at Rye High School before coming to Georgetown. She earned five varsity letter and was an all-league honoree as well as a team captain. Fulenwider swam club most recently with Empire Swimming and her high school team was a two-time state champ. She is a member of the National Honor Society and was her high school yearbook's editor in chief.
"Allison will provide depth to our breast stroke and IM groups. She brings an enthusiasm that is contagious to our team."
Kyle Gaines (Ormond Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek) is a four-time conference champion diver who holds his high school's record in the 1-meter. Gaines was First Team All-Area for three-consecutive seasons and finished fifth in the state in the 1-meter dive as a senior. He was also a four-time letterwinning with the track & field squad competing in the pole vault and the sprints. He is his class salutatorian and a member of the National Honor Society.
"Kyle's diving talent will immediately impact the men's team, as he should score points in each dual meet on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. He has the potential to be a BIG EAST finalist and NCAA Zone qualifier as a freshman."
Alanna Hulburd (Alamo, Calif./Bentley School) swims both the freestyle and breaststroke and was a four-year letterwinner at Bentley School. She was a four-year letterwinner and a first team all-league honoree. She swam with the Crow Canyon Sharks and holds four records at her high school. Hulburd played on the volleyball team and works with the National Charities League.
"Alanna will immediately make an impact and compete for relays spots in the breast strokes. She has had a great passion for Georgetown from the very start of her recruiting process."
Petra Janney (Edgecomb, Md./Phillips Exeter Academy) comes to the Hilltop from Edgecomb, Md. She swims butterfly, freestyle and backstroke as well as competing in the IM. Janney was the MVP of her squad at North Yarmouth Academy and swam her final season at Phillips Exeter Academy where she was team MVP for the undefeated team. Janney is also an accomplished water polo player and participated in lacrosse and volleyball. She was active with the Make-a-Wish Committee and was a National Merit Scholar.
"Petra is going to solidify our IM group and provide quality depth in the back and fly events. She is a very talented young lady and we are very proud that she will be joining our family."
Maciej Kietlinski (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) is no stranger to Georgetown as he joins his sister Samantha on the squad in the fall. Kietlinski spent a majority of his career swimming club with Eastern Express. In his one year swimming at Hopewell Valley Central, Kietlinski was the Trenton Times 2009-10 Swimmer of the Year and broke six high school records. He is a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and rides with the Pennington First Aid Squad as an EMT.
"Matt will bring dynamic versatility to our dual meet lineup as he has the opportunity to score points for us in six different events."
Christian Kilgore (Wichita, Ka./The Independent School) is a two-time state champion from Wichita, Kan. He won the 2010 state championship in both the 100 breaststroke and the 200 IM. Kilgore was a four-year letter winning swimmer and a five-time letter-winning tennis player at The Independent School. He swam with the Wichita Swim Club and was also his high school class president as both a junior and a senior.
"Christian will bring top tier talent to our breast and IM corp, he is also expected to contribute in the sprint events."
Michelle Konkoly (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) comes to the Hilltop from Eagleville, Pa., and is a sprint freestyle swimmer. She was an all-state swimmer and four-year letterwinner at Methacton High School. She most recently swam with the Methacton Aquatic Club as well as the North Penn Summer Training Team. Konkoly is a member of the National Honor Society and an Academic All-American, she was also a part of numerous community service organizations.
"Michelle will step into an established sprint group and is expected to compete for top relay spots instantly."
Kristen Krebs (Williston Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) is a distance freestyle swimmer from Williston Park, N.Y. She was a member of the league-champion Sacred Heart Academy and also qualified for sectionals her senior season. Krebs swam club with Long Island Express and was a two-year caption. She is a member of the National Honor Society and played in her high school's orchestra.
"Kristen will bring needed depth to our middle distance and distance corp. She will have at least two individual event swims in every dual meet."
Matthew Mandel (Grosse Point Farm, Mich./Grosse Point South) was a four-year letterwinner and a freestyle All-American. He was all-state in the 100, 200 and 400 freestyle and was All-American in both the 200 and 400 free. Mandel completed with the Grosse Pointe Gators and was a two-time captain of his high school squad. He is a member of the National Honor Society and coaches with the Special Olympics.
"Matt's impact will immediately be felt within the sprint group, he should challenge for relay spots as a freshman, and has great size and speed ability."
Daniel Mangan (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) comes to Georgetown swimming the butterfly, breaststroke and IM. He a member of the all-area team in high school and swam club with the Wilton Y Wahoos where the team competed in national meets. Mangan was a four-year member of the honor roll at Wilton and has been participating in the St. Vincent's Swim Across the Sound for the past four years. The organization does open-water swims over 15 miles long to raise money for cancer research.
"Dan will be a solid depth performer in the fly events and add strength to the lineup in the 200 IM."
William Nicholas (Newtown Square, Pa./The Haverford School) comes to Georgetown after a school-record setting career at The Haverford School. Nicholas was a three-sport athlete in swimming, water polo and baseball. He is a sprint freestyle and butterfly athlete that earned All-Main Line as a senior. Nicholas was named to the high honor roll all four years and was president of the Signet Society.
"Dirk is going to provide strong depth to the back, fly and sprint corp. We are expecting steady development from Dirk."
Lauren Opatrny (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga) was a swimmer and played water polo at Saratoga High School. She swims the 200 IM and 100 backstroke and was the two-time MVP of her high school squad. Opatrny was an All-League water polo player and swam club with the Santa Clara Swim Club. She Is member of the National Charity League and earned the Scholar-Athlete of Distinction at Saratoga.
"Lauren is certainly one of the most versatile swimmer we've ever had join our program. She will be an immediate threat to take school records from the first dual meet."
Rohan Patnaik (Fremont, Calif./St. Francis) comes to the Hilltop after an outstanding career at St. Francis High School. He swam the 100 and 200 butterfly as well as the 100 backstroke. He was named the Pacific Swimming Most Outstanding Swimmer in 2005 and 2008 and was an All-American as a junior. Patnaik was a member of Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics and has worked with political campaigns.
"Rohan has established himself as a top tier flier and is expected to be a great competitor and training partner of the current fliers."
Alexandra van Nispen (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn High School) is a freestyle specialist that competes in the 50, 100 and 200 free. She also swam with the Berkeley Aquatic Club and was an All-Essex County First Team honoree in a number of events. Van Nispen was undefeated in high school individual events from 2007-2010 and was also a member of the honor roll. She is a licensed EMT that volunteers in the pediatric ER.
"AJ will also be joining an established sprint group, but is expected to compete for relay spots on the conference championship roster as a freshman. She will add depth in the backstroke and butterfly events."
Spencer Walsh (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) swims the 50 and 100 freestyle and was a four-year letterwinner at Trinity High School. He was an all-state swimmer after his team was the state runner-up in 2010. Walsh also earned All-American consideration in the 50 free and was an All-American with the 200 free relay. He was a two-year captain on the tennis team and swam with the Lakeside Seahawks. Walsh was his class valedictorian and a member of the Cycling Club.
"Spencer is going to bring raw speed to a sprint group that is in need of replacements after the loss of this year's class. He is expected to compete for relay spots as a freshman."
The team will break for the summer but recruits and returners alike will be back in the pool for the Hoyas in the fall.
