WASHINGTON - Cincinnati scored five runs in the second inning and five Bearcat pitchers held Georgetown to seven hits en route to a 10-0 and the series sweep at Marge Schott Stadium Friday evening.
The Hoyas close out the 2010 season with a 24-31 overall record and a 5-22 mark in BIG EAST play, while Cincinnati improves to 29-27 overall and 13-14 in league play. Georgetown's 24 wins were the most for a Hoya team since the 2006 season and the team, despite finishing with only five wins in league play, had 10 games against conference opponents decided by one run.
Freshman pitcher Charles Steinman (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade) gave up five runs in the second inning and lasted two innings in the start, taking the loss and falling to 1-5 this season.
Six other pitchers appeared in the game for the Hoyas, with sophomore Bobby Kirby (Bel Air, Md./Loyola Blakefield) giving up one run in one inning, freshman Thomas Polus (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) allowing one run in one inning, freshman James Heine (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) throwing scoreless fifth inning, senior Cary Piligian (Troy, Mich./Detroit Jesuit) giving up three runs in the sixth inning, junior Jared Cohen (Phoenixville, Pa./The Haverford School) throwing a scoreless seventh inning and senior Billy Concannon (Dallas, Texas/St. Mark's School) throwing a scoreless eighth inning.
Junior catcher Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles to lead the Hoya lineup.
Sophomore right fielder Rand Ravnaas (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints' Episcopal) finished the season leading the team in batting with a .347 average, including a .322 mark against BIG EAST opponents. He led the team in hits (66), home runs (11), slugging percentage (.626) and total bases (119) and was second on the team with 16 doubles.
Redshirt junior first baseman Dan Capeless (Centreville, Mass./Boston College H.S.) hit .317 with 15 doubles, eight home runs and was second on the team with 38 RBI. In BIG EAST play, he finished with a .311 batting average, six home runs and 19 RBI.
Fernandez came on strong in the second half of the season and finished 2010 with a .317 average, 13 doubles, five home runs and 29 RBI.
Senior center fielder Tommy Lee (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) led the team with 29 stolen bases and finished the season with a .305 average. He hit eight doubles, a team-high five triples and five home runs while driving in 29 runs. Junior third baseman Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) hit .286 with a team-high 17 doubles, seven home runs and had 36 RBI.
Senior shortstop Tommy Elliott (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep), the only player to start all 55 games this season, finished the season batting .275 with 11 doubles, one triple, three home runs and 13 RBI. Senior second baseman Chip Malt (Boston, Mass./Buckingham, Browne & Nichols) hit .269, with six doubles and drove in 22 runs.
Senior left fielder Billy Cupelo (Franklin, Mass./Bishop Feehan), who transferred this season after graduating from Holy Cross last year and used his last year of eligibility on the Hilltop, finished the 2010 season with a team-best 42 runs batted in. He carried a .266 batting average with 12 doubles and six home runs.
Sophomore Kevin Johnson (Seekonk, Mass./Belmont Hill) was second on the team with a .342 average and hit seven doubles, four home runs and drove in 17 runs.
