WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Women's Basketball Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy is the 2010 recipient of the Black Coaches & Administrator's Female Coach of the Year award the organization announced Monday. Williams-Flournoy earned the national honor after leading the Hoyas to a 26-7 record and the squad's first trip to the NCAA Tournament in over 15 years. This marks the first national coaching award in program history.
Georgetown had one of the best season's in program history going 26-7 overall and 13-3 in the BIG EAST. The Hoyas were selected to finish eighth in the conference but wound up in a tie for second earning the third overall seed in the BIG EAST Tournament.
The Blue & Gray posted a 16-game win streak and spent 12-consecutive weeks in the national polls moving as high as No. 12 in the AP Poll. Georgetown defeated four ranked squads including No. 4/3 Notre Dame in front of a record crowd at McDonough Arena.
The Hoyas earned the fifth seed in the Memphis Region of the NCAA Tournament marking the squad's first trip to the tourney since 1993. Georgetown defeated Marist 64-42 in the opening round before falling to national runner-up Baylor.
Georgetown made history with a program-best 26 wins, 16-game win streak and the emergence of Sugar Rodgers. The freshman was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and First Team All-BIG EAST as well as the program's first-ever rookie to be named Honorable Mention AP All-America.
Since 2005-06, Williams-Flournoy's teams have continually improved notching 20 wins for two-consecutive seasons. With seven freshman, she led the team to a deep run in the 2009 WNIT with stifling defensive pressure. That carried over into the 2009-10 season where the Hoyas spent the majority of the season ranked among the top two in the nation in steals per game and turnover margin.
Williams-Flournoy came to the Hilltop in 2004 after serving as an assistant coach at Southwest Missouri State and the University of Georgia for eight seasons. She was an assistant at Georgetown for four years helping GU to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1993. This award marks her first national coaching honor.
The BCA Award recipients will be honored during the BCA National Convention and Expo, at the awards banquet on Friday, June 5, 2010 at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club, a Salamander property. The event is open to the public.
Williams-Flournoy will be among elite company as Kevin Sumlin, head football coach at University of Houston, is awarded the Fritz Pollard BCA Male Coach of the Year and Tony Smith, girls basketball coach at Bolingbrook High School in Bolingbrook, Ill., wins the High School Coach of the Year award. In addition, the organization will present the BCA Administrator of the Year Award posthumously to Dr. Myles Brand, Past President of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
