WASHINGTON - Georgetown University senior men's lacrosse player Chris Nixon (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after helping lead the Hoyas to a 14-9 win over Rutgers this past weekend.
The win improved Georgetown's record to 8-5 overall and 4-1 in the BIG EAST, where the Hoyas are tied for second place. Georgetown is ranked No. 14 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse poll and No. 14 by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA).
Nixon picked up three ground balls and had four caused turnovers in the Senior Day win over Rutgers. He held RU's leading scorer, Justin Pennington, to only one point, an assist that came late in the fourth quarter. The Georgetown defense held Rutgers without a shot on goal in the second quarter and allowed a combined two shots on goal in the final two quarters.
Nixon is third on the team with 40 ground balls and leads the team with 27 caused turnovers. He is ranked 14th in the country in caused turnovers per game, averaging 1.85 per game.
This is the third time a Hoya player has earned defensive honors from the BIG EAST, as senior goalie Jack Davis (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) was recognized on March 8, and junior middie Brian Tabb (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) earned the honor on April 12.
Senior middie Scott Kocis (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after scoring four goals in the win over Rutgers. The four goals were a career-high for Kocis, who is second on the team in scoring with 15 goals and 12 assists for 27 points.
Georgetown closes out the 2010 regular season on Saturday, May 8, visiting No. 13/11 Villanova (10-4, 4-1) in a crucial BIG EAST matchup in Pennsylvania. Face-off is slated for 7 p.m.
