WASHINGTON - Georgetown women's basketball has announced its non-conference opponents for the 2010-11 season. The Hoyas have added nine new squads to the nonconference slate which includes seven home games and a three-game stint in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
GU will open the season at home for the first time since the 2006 season. Georgetown will host Augusta State on Saturday, Nov. 13 at McDonough Arena.
The Blue & Gray will continue its three-game homestand with a contest against local rival, the University of Maryland on Tuesday, Nov. 16. The two squads haven't met since the 2003-04 season. That year, Georgetown fell to the Terps 66-63 in overtime at the Surf `n Slam Tournament in San Diego, Calif. Maryland eventually earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament making it to the second round. The last time the Hoyas hosted the Terps at McDonough Arena was in 1985-86. Last season Maryland advanced to the third round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament.
Georgetown will host LaSalle University on Friday, Nov. 19. Last year, the Hoyas downed the Explorers, 71-40, in Philadelphia.
The Blue & Gray will spend Thanksgiving in the U.S. Virgin Islands at the 11th Annual U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam Reef Division. The Hoyas will play Georgia Tech, Missouri and Tennessee over a three-day span. Two of GU's three tournament opponents participated in the NCAA Tournament in March, with Tennessee advancing to the Sweet 16 before falling to eventual Final Four participant and 2008 Paradise Jam alumni, Baylor. Georgia Tech lost in the first round. The first game is scheduled for Nov. 25.
Georgetown will continue its series with Richmond on Dec. 1 at McDonough Arena. The last time the Hoyas hosted the Spiders was in the third round of the 2009 WNIT. The Blue & Gray won 65-49 advancing to the quarterfinals before falling to Boston College. Last season, GU downed Richmond in Virginia 78-63. The Spiders earned a berth in WNIT advancing to the second round.
On Dec. 4, Georgetown will embark on a three-game road trip starting at Wake Forest University. The squads met last season at McDonough Arena with the Hoyas coming out with a 73-56 victory. The Demon Deacons were also 2010 WNIT participants. Former BIG EAST foe The University of Miami is next on the slate on Dec. 7. The Hurricanes were last year's WNIT runner's up and hold an 15-8 series advantage over the Hoyas dating back to Miami's time in the BIG EAST. Finally, Georgetown will travel to Rider University to close out the road trip. The Hoyas hold a 3-0 series record over the Broncs.
The Blue & Gray will host Missouri State on Dec. 19 as Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy welcomes her former squad to McDonough Arena. Williams-Flournoy was an assistant with the Bears for two seasons. Georgetown opened last season with a 79-55 victory in Missouri. The Bears made it to the third round of the WNIT last year. Coppin State is up next at McDonough Arena on Dec. 22. This will be the first meeting between the two teams.
Georgetown's final nonconference road trip will be to the University of Houston where the Hoyas will take on the Cougars on Dec. 28. Houston participated in the 2010 WNIT and this will be its first meeting with GU. Closing out nonconference play on Dec. 30 is Clemson at McDonough Arena. The Tigers and Hoyas met last season in South Carolina with Georgetown coming away with the 72-57 victory.
The Blue & Gray will face five opponents from the Atlantic Coast Conference and one from the Southeastern Conference. Six 2010-11 opponents played in the WNIT and two earned berths in the NCAA Tournament.
The Hoyas will begin practice on Oct. 15 at Georgetown's Midnight Madness. The remainder of the schedule will be released in the coming weeks.
