WASHINGTON - Georgetown exploded for five goals in a seven-minute span in the first half, with members of the freshmen class accounting for three goals and four assists, as the Hoyas cruised to a 9-0 win over American in the 2010 season opener at Reeves Field.
It was the fifth season-opening win in the last six years for Georgetown, who improves to 1-0, while AU falls to 0-1. The win was the sixth-straight for GU over American. The nine goals were the most by a Georgetown team under Head Coach Dave Nolan and the most for a Hoya team since a 9-1 win over Howard on Sept. 24, 2003.
Redshirt junior Ingrid Wells (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair), a Preseason All-America selection and a Hermann Trophy candidate, led the offensive charge for the Blue & Gray, scoring two goals and two assists, junior Camille Trujillo (Albuquerque, N.M./St. Pius X) scored two goals and sophomore Catherine Cabot (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) had a goal and an assist. The class of freshmen finished with four goals and four assists for the day. Midfielder Alexa St. Martin (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) scored two goals, forward Kaitlin Brenn (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) added a goal and an assist and defender Kailey Blain (Merrimac, N.H./Merrimac) had two assists and defender Alex Bushman (Manhattan, N.Y./Bronx School of Science) added one assist.
The Hoyas took a 1-0 lead at 29:50 when Trujillo picked up a loose ball after a cross from Wells was not handled by the AU goalie. The junior forward put the ball in from close range.
Georgetown continued to pressure over the next 13 minutes and capitalized in the 29th minute when Cabot picked up a loose ball in front after a feed from Blain and sent a shot over the reach of the AU goalie, pushing the lead to 2-0.
That goal was the first of five Georgetown would score over the next seven minutes as the lead grew to 6-0 by halftime. Just over a minute after Cabot's goal, Blain sent a ball from the far side toward the middle of the field, where Brenn picked it up and beat the AU defense at 29:18, giving GU a 3-0 lead. Two minutes later, at 31:22, Dinn sent a ball to Wells, who came in from the far side of the box and beat AU goalie Arianna Efstathiou in the open field, making it 4-0.
The Hoyas pushed the lead to 5-0 in the 34th minute when St. Martin punched in a loose ball in the box after a corner kick from Bushman. St. Martin added the sixth goal of the game for the Hoyas with 9:26 left in the first half, picking up a through ball from Brenn from 25-yards out, dribbling toward the box and blasting a shot that Efstathiou could not stop.
Wells had a hand in all three goals in the second half, scoring the first and assisting on the final two. She scored her second goal of the game in the 59th minute, holding the ball on the far side of the field and blasting a shot from 25 yards out that sailed into the top corner of the goal.
In the 64th minute, Wells sent a cross from the right side to Dinn, who took a header that beat AU goalie Lindsey Farthing to the back left. One minute later, Wells led a fast break down the right side, sent a through ball past two defenders and found Trujillo who sent a low shot from 18 yards out, making it 9-0.
The Hoyas out-shot AU, 15-2, and had nine shots on goal, with four corner kicks and two saves for senior goalie Jackie DesJardin (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty), who recorded her 25th career shutout.
The Georgetown defense, led by junior defender Michaela Buonomo (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock) did not allow American to take a shot in the first half and limited the Eagles to only two shots on goal all game.
Georgetown is next in action on Friday, Sept. 27, hosting local rival George Washington. The Hoyas' home opener kicks off at 3 p.m.
