WASHINGTON - Two members of the Georgetown University women's soccer team were honored with weekly awards from the BIG EAST Conference as the 2010 season began this past weekend.

The Hoyas won their season opener on Saturday, posting a 9-0 win at American. The nine goals were the most for a Georgetown team since a 9-1 win over Howard during the 2003 season.

Redshirt junior Ingrid Wells (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and freshman midfielder Alexa St. Martin (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) was selected as the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week.

Wells, the only unanimous selection on the Preseason All-BIG EAST team, scored two goals and had two assists in Georgetown's win at American. She scored the team's fourth goal in the first half and then had a hand in all three second half tallies. She scored the opening goal of the second half, a blast from 25 yards out, and then assisted the final two goals, first from freshman Colleen Dinn (Holy Cross, Md./Holy Cross) and then from junior Camille Trujillo (Albuquerque, N.M./St. Pius X).

In just over two years on the Hilltop, Wells has had an impact on the Hoya record book. She ranks fifth all-time in points with 56 and needs only two more to pass Sara Jordan (C'10) for fourth place. The midfielder is the program's all-time leader in assists (26) and is tied for fifth all-time in goals (15). Wells was also selected to the Missouri Athletic Club's (MAC) Hermann Trophy Watch List, recognizing the top player in intercollegiate soccer, and was named a preseason All-America by Soccer America.

St. Martin, meanwhile, had a spectacular start to her college career, one of several highlights for the Georgetown freshman class. Coming off the bench, she scored two first half goals to spark the Hoya offense to a 6-0 halftime lead. Her first goal came after a corner kick in the 34th minute and she added another a minute later when she beat the defense in transition.

It was an impressive debut for members of the first-year class on the Hilltop as two freshmen were in the starting lineup - defenders Kailey Blain (Merrimac, N.H./Merrimac) and Emily Menges (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) - and seven players accounted for four goals and four assists.

The Hoyas make their home opener on Friday, Aug.27, hosting local rival George Washington. Live stats and a webcast of the game will be available on the Georgetown Athletics website - www.guhoyas.com.

The homestand for the team continues on Sunday, Aug. 29 (1 p.m.) when Georgetown hosts St. Francis (Pa.).

Georgetown finished the 2009 season with a 12-6-2 overall record, including a 6-4-2 mark in the BIG EAST Conference, finishing third in the National Division. The Hoyas advanced to the postseason for the fifth time in six years, reaching the Quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament. GU was picked to finish in third place in the BIG EAST National Division in the league's preseason voting, released earlier this month.
