WASHINGTON - Sophomore women's basketball player Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) has been named to the 2010-11 Preseason "Wade Watch" List for The State Farm® Wade Trophy Division I Player of the Year. Rodgers is one of 25 student-athletes who best embodies the spirit of Lily Margaret Wade according to the following criteria: game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team and overall playing ability.
Rodgers was an Honorable Mention AP All-American and First Team All-BIG EAST, the first time in program history that a freshman won both honors. Rodgers also earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and five BIG EAST Rookie of the Week awards, as well as being named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll three times. She finished fifth in the conference in scoring, averaging 17.6 ppg and led the league in three-pointers made with 2.5 per game. She is ranked fourth in the GU record books for points in a season with 580 points this year. Rodger's 83 trey's places her as the all-time leader for three's in a season and 11th on the career list.
The shooting guard was one of four players selected from the BIG EAST including two-time winner Maya Moore from Connecticut. The BIG EAST tied the SEC for the most student-athletes on the list. Rodgers was one of only four sophomores to receive the recognition, while two were 2009-10 opponents in Notre Dame's Skylar Diggins and Baylor's Brittney Griner.
Georgetown had the most successful season in program history in 2009-10 with an overall record of 26-7 and a mark of 13-3 in the BIG EAST. The Hoyas defeated four ranked teams this season and was ranked in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today Polls for 10-consecutive weeks, at one point reaching No. 12 on the AP Poll and No. 11 on the ESPN/USA Today Poll. The Blue & Gray finished the season with an RPI of 20, as well as being ranked 13th and 17th on the AP and the ESPN/USA Today Polls, respectively.
GU tied for second in league play and earned its first berth in the NCAA Tournament where the Hoyas advanced to the second round. In addition, Georgetown continued a 15-game home court win streak, which is the 11th longest in the nation.
The Wade Trophy Coalition was established in June of 2000 when the WBCA partnered with The National Association of Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS). For the past nine years the two have worked together to present The State Farm® Wade Trophy Player of the Year Award. A committee comprised of coaches, administration and media from across the United States selects the winner.
This is the first "Wade Watch" List candidate under Georgetown Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. The Hoyas will have their first official practice on October 15 at GU's annual Midnight Madness.
