WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad will travel to Providence, R.I., on Saturday to take on the Providence College Friars on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Alumni Hall. The game will be televised on BIG EAST TV which can be seen locally on MASN as well as online at ESPN3.com or as part of ESPN Full Court. The Blue & Gray is 13-4 overall and 1-2 in BIG EAST play.
No. 18/17 Georgetown dropped its last contest in a heartbreaking double overtime loss to Marquette on Saturday, 75-73. It snapped a six-game win streak and a 23-game home victory streak for the Hoyas.
Sophomore Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) had her third double-double of the season with 26 points and pulling down ten rebounds. She also had two assists and three steals for the all-around performance. Junior Tia Magee (Tula, Okla./Jenks) had 15 points and seven rebounds, while classmate Adria Crawford (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) posted 12 points and eight rebounds. Junior Rubylee Wright (Latta, S.C./Latta) added nine points and a squad-high four assists as well as one steal.
Georgetown shot 39.4 percent and outrebounded the Golden Eagles, 49-42, forcing the squad into 35.5 percent shooting from the field. The defense also forced Marquette into 17 turnovers on seven steals.
Rodgers leads the Hoyas with 19.0 points per game and 40 steals. She is also averaging 5.3 rebounds per game to lead the squad and is just ahead of Magee and Crawford who are both averaging 4.5 rebounds per game. Wright has recorded a team-high 86 assists on the season and is GU's third-leading scorer averaging 8.3 ppg behind senior Monica McNutt's (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross)11.1 ppg.
Additionally on Monday, Rodgers was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for the fifth time this season. The sophomore averaged 25.0 ppg for the week and 10.0 rpg. Later in the week, Rodgers was named to the Wooden Top 20 list, one of only three players from the BIG EAST.
Providence is 8-7 this year and 1-2 in the BIG EAST. The Friars defeated South Florida, 64-57, last Saturday in Providence, R.I. Symone Roberts led the team with 13 points while Teya Wright and Lauren Okafor both grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Two PC players scored in double figures in the win.
Roberts leads Providence with 11.8 points per game, she also a team-best 34 steals. Wright is averaging a squad-high 8.4 rebounds per game. Two players on the squad average more than 10 points per game.
The Hoyas are 21-27 all-time against the Friars. Last season, the Blue & Gray downed Providence, 74-62, at McDonough Arena. Rodgers led Georgetown with 26 points, while McNutt had 15 and Magee posted 13 points along with a squad-best five rebounds. GU had 15 steals on 21 forced turnovers. The last meeting in Rhode Island was during the 2008-09 season when the Hoyas won, 57-55 on a last-second layup from Shanice Fuller. Georgetown is 9-14 all-time on the road against Providence.
