WASHINGTON - The No. 16/17 Georgetown University women's basketball squad got back on the winning track Saturday with a 60-44 victory over the Villanova University Wildcats (8-11, 0-6 BIG EAST) at McDonough Arena. Junior Tia Magee (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) had a season-best 18 points as three Hoyas scored in double figures. Georgetown is now 15-5 overall and 3-3 in BIG EAST play.
The Hoyas had a seven-point lead to start the second half, but soon took the advantage to double-digits thanks to a pair of free throws from Magee. Ahead by eight with 6:23 remaining in the half, senior Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) hit back-to-back threes to make it 54-40. The treys were two of McNutt's three in the half.
Georgetown's largest lead came at 1:43 as Magee sank a pair of foul shots to go ahead 18. The Hoyas cruised to the 60-44 victory to improve to 3-3 in conference play.
The game was tight early on as Villanova attempted to stop the up-tempo Georgetown offense. Defense is how the Blue & Gray grabbed the lead going on an 8-0 run and holding the Wildcats scoreless for more than six minutes to go ahead 14-4 at the 10:14 mark of the half.
Nova whittled the lead down to five, but GU closed out the half with a jumper from Magee and a pair of free throws by freshman Andrea White (Lancaster, Va./Lancaster) made it 30-21 at the break.
Magee led all scorers with a season-high 18 points, while sophomore Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) added 17 points. McNutt had 11 points with nine coming in the second half and a squad-high six rebounds. Junior point guard Rubylee Wright (Latta, S.C./Latta) also had six rebounds, one shy of her career high.
The Hoyas outrebounded the Wildcats, 36-28, and shot 39.2 percent. The defense forced 14 turnovers and allowed just 37.2 percent shooting from Villanova.
Georgetown will have two days off before returning to McDonough Arena for a BIG EAST matchup against No. 9/9 West Virginia on Tuesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on CBS College Sports with Dave Ryan and Debbie Antonelli calling the action. Live stats will also be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
