Richmond, Va. - The Georgetown University women's tennis team opened the 2011 spring season at the VCU 4+1 hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va., on Friday. The Hoyas dropped a heartbreaker to VCU and then fell to Campbell University in the second match of the day.
Virginia Commonwealth, the No. 31 squad in the country, won the doubles match in 4+1 play, but the Hoyas bounced back with a pair of huge victories. Graduate student Stephanie Wetmore (Mississaugua, Ontario/Appleby College) took the 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Ana Bara at No. 1 singles.
That was followed up by a 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-4 win by freshman Tina Tehrani (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) at No. 4 singles.
With a 2-1 lead going into the final two matches, Georgetown battled as junior Lauren Greco (Oakmont, Pa./Shady Side Academy) won her first set over Josefin Hjertquist, 6-3, at No. 2 singles. She was consistent, but couldn't get the other two eventually falling in the final sets. Despite the effort, the Hoyas lost in the final match for a 3-2 decision.
Georgetown switched up the lineup for the second match of the day against Campbell University with only sophomore Vicky Sekely (Mississauga, Ontario/Lorne Park Secondary School) playing in both in singles play.
Freshman Madeline Jaeger (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach) and sophomore Samantha Martin (Manulis, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manulis) both dropped their first sets at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively, but came back to get the second. Jaeger managed the 6-4 victory and Martin won 6-1.
Unfortunately, neither could get the last set as Georgetown fell, 4-1. The win came in doubles play as Wetmore and Greco won 6-0, 6-0.
Georgetown will open conference play next Sunday as the Hoyas travel to Syracuse University.
