WASHINGTON - The No. 19/19 Georgetown women's basketball squad came up with its second win over a top-ten opponent this season with a 65-60 victory over the No. 8/8 West Virginia University Mountaineers (19-2, 5-2 BIG EAST) Tuesday evening at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas dealt the Mountaineers just their second loss of the season and improved to 16-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

An 8-0 run midway through the second half, allowed West Virginia to take a 52-45 lead at 8:53. The Hoyas charged back tying it as sophomore Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) hit a layup to tie it at 50 with 4:25 remaining.

WVU evened the score, but Rodgers made an off-balance shot with 50 seconds on the clock and added a pair of free throws to give the Blue & Gray a four-point lead. Defensive stops on the other end allowed the Hoyas to control the pace and forced West Virginia to foul as Georgetown held on for the 65-60 victory.

The Hoyas opened the game with a 10-0 run, but allowed a 9-0 Mountaineer run midway through the half to tie it for the first of 11 times in the game. Georgetown managed to hold on, not allowing WVU to get ahead with stingy defense despite turnovers on offense.

GU closed out the first half with a 4-0 run to lead by seven, 35-28, at the break.

Rodgers led all scorers with 30 points, while senior Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md/Academy of the Holy Cross) added 13 points with a team-high six rebounds to tie junior Adria Crawford (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) on the boards. Rodgers was a perfect 10-for-10 and Crawford went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.

Georgetown outrebounded West Virginia, 32-17, and shot 51.3 percent for the game as well as 87.5 percent from the line. In an aggressive game, the squads combined for 51 turnovers and 21 steals.

"We were really just turning the ball over way too many times," Georgetown Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy said. "But going back and making the defensive stops gave us opportunities to not get so far behind."

The Blue & Gray will continue BIG EAST play on Saturday as the squad travels to Seton Hall for a 2 p.m., in South Orange, N.J.
