SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The No. 19/19 Georgetown women's basketball squad improved to 5-3 in BIG EAST play on Saturday with a 59-41 victory over the Seton Hall University Pirates (7-14, 0-8 BIG EAST) at Walsh Gymnasium. Georgetown had a big first half leading by 20 points at the break. The Blue & Gray is now 17-5 overall.
"Once again we had way too many turnovers, but I was happy with our rebounding today," said Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. "We need to work on playing with the same intensity the entire game."
The Hoyas had a disastrous start to the second half not scoring for the first six minutes and allowing Seton Hall a 7-0 run including five points from the line. Tia Magee (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) hit GU's first points of the half on free throws at 13:57 and Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) added a field goal seconds later.
Fouls on the other end allowed the Pirates to stay in it cutting the lead to 10 on nine free throws and seven Hoya turnovers in the first ten minutes.
The Blue & Gray righted the ship with a 9-0 run, including five points from Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork), that spanned six minutes. At the final buzzer, Georgetown had the 59-41 victory.
Georgetown closed out the first half with a 15-7 run as Magee hit seven of GU's final nine points to go into the locker room leading 37-17. The defense held the Pirates to 17 points marking the lowest point total the Hoyas have held an opponent to in conference play and the third-fewest of the season.
Looking at a 12-point lead midway through, Adria Crawford (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) battled down low to rattle off six-straight points and to personally stage a 6-0 run. The Hoyas opened the game with three-consecutive threes, including two from McNutt and one from Rodgers, and built an early seven-point advantage.
"Adria does all of the little things that don't show up on the stat sheet," said Williams-Flournoy. "She is our hustle player."
Crawford led the Hoyas with 14 points and nine rebounds. Magee and Rodgers both added 13 points and McNutt managed 11 as Georgetown had four players in double figures.
The Hoyas outrebounded the Pirates, 41-27, and forced 18 turnovers on defense.
The Blue & Gray will travel to Louisville, Ky., on Tuesday for a conference matchup with the Cardinals at 7 p.m. at the KFC Yum! Center. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com. The game will also be Louisville's annual Pink Zone game.
