WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's tennis squad opened its 2011 spring season on Friday at the VCU 4+1 hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.. The Hoyas fell to VCU as well as Campbell University in a pair of abbreviated dual matches.
In the first match, the Blue & Gray lost, 5-0, to Virginia Commonwealth. GU struggled in singles play, not having any matches go to three sets. In the doubles match, junior Michael Clarke (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago/Saddlebrook Prep) and classmate Andrew Bruhn (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) battled to force a second set. The pair fell to Camill Salomon and Jaime Vazquez by a score of 7-5, 6-4.
In the second match of the day, Georgetown once again lost, 5-0, but had a number of solid performances. In doubles, the pair of sophomore Charlie Caris (Des Moines, Iowa/Theodore Roosevelt) and freshman Alex Friedlich (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck North) dropped the first set, 6-4, but came back to take the second by a score of 6-4. In the third, the pair fought to the end eventually falling 7-6(5).
In singles play, No. 2 singles player Bruhn lost the first set, 6-2, but came back to win the second, 7-5. He fell in the third by a score of 6-2. Freshman Casey Distaso (The Woodlands, Texas/Edmond North) also looked strong at No. 4 singles forcing three sets.
The Hoyas will be back in action next weekend playing a pair of dual matches at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. They will close out the weekend with a match at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa.
